German defense chief: Russian drone incursion in Poland shows no signs of being accidental

German Minister Comments on Drone Incidents

On Wednesday, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius remarked that there is “no evidence” suggesting the recent drone incursions from Russia were unintentional.

Polish military forces had previously alerted that their airspace was violated multiple times by drone-like objects, coinciding with Russia’s extensive strikes on Ukrainian land.

Pistorius stated during a session in the German Parliament that the large number of drones seen over Polish territory couldn’t have possibly flown across by mistake. “There’s really no reason to take that route between Belarus and Ukraine,” he noted.

He described these drone incursions as a provocation aimed at NATO as a whole.

“The continuous breaches of airspace are intolerable, particularly those involving Russian drones. This isn’t merely a provocation against Poland; it challenges the entire framework of NATO and European security,” he elaborated.

He emphasized Germany’s commitment to supporting Poland and maintaining NATO’s air defense efforts. Additionally, he noted that Russia appears to be testing the resolve and readiness of NATO through these frequent incursions above the Baltic Sea.

“Russia aims to create a sense of instability here,” he asserted. “We can assure Moscow that this tactic will not succeed.”

While acknowledging that the incidents were not military attacks per se—since they did not result in destruction or casualties—Pistorius characterized them as a deliberate violation of international law and an affront to Polish sovereignty.

He expressed a firm stance against being provoked.

“We remain committed to strength and unity, and we won’t let ourselves be swayed. Germany will back all actions that secure both Poland’s safety and, by extension, Europe’s safety,” he concluded.
