Tragic Hit-and-Run Claims Lives of German Tourists in NYC
A tragic hit-and-run incident in Midtown has resulted in the deaths of two German tourists who were in New York City to celebrate their anniversary.
Alexandra Sabine Lewalter Maric, aged 50, was marking her 23rd anniversary with her husband, Udo Lewalter, 55.
Witnesses described Alexandra as a vibrant and cheerful person. A friend, who had known her since they were teens, recalled in a phone interview, “I’ve never seen her have a bad day.” He emphasized how important it was for her to keep in touch over the years, always remembering birthdays and sending well wishes.
Mohammed Abouzaid, 40, was arrested at the Manhattan Crown Court after being charged with fleeing the scene of the accident and not yielding to pedestrians. This arrest came amid a surprising bail setting of $25,000.
According to authorities, Abouzaid was driving a Toyota minivan when he struck the couple around 2:40 PM on Wednesday. Alexandra suffered severe injuries, and her husband was left in critical condition with a skull fracture.
Abouzaid attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward. Reports indicate he was unlicensed to drive at the time of the incident.
Originally from the town of Serb in Germany, Alexandra was passionate about music and had married Udo on September 21, 2002, before relocating to Hamburg. Just days before the accident, the couple had attended a concert by the band “The Kills” to celebrate their anniversary.
A journalist from Nordbayerrischer Kurier mentioned the couple’s excitement about their trip, noting they had been looking forward to exploring New York City.
