Gerrit Cole discusses the possibility of returning to the Yankees on Opening Day.

Gerrit Cole’s Recovery Progress

Gerrit Cole, the Yankees right-handed pitcher, is reportedly making strides in his recovery following Tommy John surgery that kept him off the field for all of the 2025 season. However, he doesn’t anticipate being part of the team’s rotation when the next season kicks off.

During an annual gala for ALS United Greater New York, Cole mentioned to the Post that his initial rehab phase is “coming to a close” within the next month. Still, he remains unsure about when he will be ready to play again.

His rehabilitation started back in August with some flat-ground pitching, and he’s gradually increased his activity since then. Just last week, he even posted a video showcasing a strike from the mound in the Yankees’ bullpen.

At 35, Cole is feeling good. He plans to have a few more bullpen sessions before taking a break for the holidays. “After that, I guess I’ll sit back and think about what it all means for next season,” he commented, making it clear that uncertainty still looms regarding his return.

Cole, who claimed the 2023 American League Cy Young Award, expressed he doesn’t know when the team’s medical staff will clear him for game participation. “They mentioned that an opening date probably isn’t realistic, but that seems to be the most sensible approach at this time,” he reflected. “Still, I’m not entirely sure when that could actually happen, but hopefully it will be soon.”

Last spring, he only appeared in two training games before undergoing his surgery in March. Typically, recovery from this kind of procedure takes about 14 months, which means he might be back around May or June.

On another note, Cole also spoke about teammate Cody Bellinger, who is exploring free agency. “Cody is fantastic,” he said. “In my career, I’ve rarely encountered a player like him. I think of a couple guys from my time with Pittsburgh, Josh Harrison and Sean Rodriguez, who were really good defensively. Cody stands out even more, with an OPS of .850, which is impressive. He’s not just a great player, but a wonderful person in the clubhouse and a great family guy as well.”

At the gala, Cole was honored with the Lou Gehrig Sports Award, given to athletes who reflect the strength and values of the famed player. He described this recognition as a “huge honor.” “Everything Lou Gehrig represents, and what this organization contributes to the community, is truly special to be a part of,” Cole remarked. “Being a member of the Yankees allows me to embody the brand and the values Lou stood for, both on and off the field.”
