Gerrit Cole was again cited for a pitch time violation before the inning.
Before the second inning of the Yankees-Guardians game in the Bronx on Thursday afternoon, Cole threw an extra pitch during warmups, causing home plate umpire Derek Thomas to dismiss the Yankees ace.
The inning’s leadoff hitter, Cleveland’s JonKency Noel, was not near the plate when Cole threw the extra pitch.
Cole appeared to be arguing with Thomas before Yankees manager Aaron Boone came out of the dugout and joined the conversation.
Cole got behind in the count and eventually walked Noel.
It was the second time this season that Cole was called for a pitch-clock violation before the start of an inning. On July 19, during the Bombers’ 6-1 win over the Rays, the 33-year-old Cole missed his final warm-up pitch until there were 20 seconds left in the game.
