Gerrit Cole’s presence a harsh reminder of the Yankees’ fine balance

On Monday, Gerrit Cole addressed reporters about his recovery, marking the first time he’s discussed his condition this regular season.

Cole seemed to be in a positive frame of mind, emerging from what he described as a “dark” period since that pivotal day in March. At that time, it became clear he would require Tommy John surgery in the coming weeks. This was crucial to prevent any setbacks from simple movements. He talked for about 21 minutes, frequently gesturing with his right arm, signifying that his elbow was healing well.

However, it’s only in August that he can begin to throw again. He mentioned a typical recovery timeframe of around 14 months, placing his return to competition sometime next year.

Meanwhile, the Yankees are struggling this season. Just last Sunday, they rolled out a lineup featuring Anthony Volpe and Jazz Chisholm Jr., which frustrated many fans. It felt reminiscent of spring training in Dunedin. If that wasn’t disheartening enough for the loyal supporters, they also had concerns about how Aaron Boone managed the lineup and substitutions.
