Gerry Turner opens up about gloomy feelings following his divorce on 'Golden Bachelor'

Jerry Turner Reflects on His Marriage and New Memoir

The star of “The Golden Bachelor,” Jerry Turner, thought he had found true love with Teresa Nist, but just three months after their televised wedding, things unraveled. The 74-year-old Indiana native, who became the first senior star of ABC’s hit series, shared his experiences in his new memoir titled “Golden Years.”

Turner, a widow, married Nist in January 2024, but announced their breakup by April. Reflecting on their relationship, he described feeling he had hurt both Nist and his family. “I think, looking back, I realize it was a mistake,” he admitted. “There wasn’t a moment when I knew it was over; it was more of a gradual conclusion.”

He shared that he felt a sort of emptiness during their time together, implying he rushed into the marriage without truly believing in it. Turner has expressed feelings of resentment, admitting, “I couldn’t shake the disappointment I felt—both in myself and others.”

Nist, 71, expressed her sadness regarding the situation in a previous comment, noting that she wished Turner had been more open about his feelings before they tied the knot. Their relationship initially seemed promising; both had suffered loss, having each been widowed before. However, disagreements regarding their future and living arrangements gradually began to create distance.

Turner, who lost his first wife in 2017, was encouraged by his daughters to join the show. He had reservations but hoped for love, only to struggle with Nist’s different wants and needs. For instance, she was looking to continue working for another year, which clashed with Turner’s desire for a shared, adventurous retirement.

The couple faced many issues, including financial disagreements and a lack of shared vision for their future. Turner recalls a frantic moment before their wedding where a signature was missing from a prenuptial agreement, which amplified the approaching concerns they both faced.

Despite the feelings of warmth they once shared during their courtship, upon reflection, it became evident their bond lacked the intimacy and understanding they both sought. The marriage ended quietly, after attempting to reconcile while in California for an event.

“We were trying one last time to figure things out,” Turner recounted. “Ultimately, it came down to realizing it was time to part ways.”

Since the split, Turner has been open about his struggles, which even led him to contemplate suicide briefly after facing criticism. However, thoughts of his daughters helped him pull through those dark moments. “It was more of a fleeting thought,” he clarified, seeking clarity that he never truly intended to act on those feelings.

Lately, Turner has found new hope; he announced his engagement to Lana Sutton in October, showing that even after hardship, joy can be found again. Reflecting on his journey, he recognizes a resilience that will continue to guide him as he moves forward into this new chapter of his life.
