Gershkovich’s sister: Getting letters from Russian jail is ‘like Christmas morning’

Evan Gershkovich’s sister Danielle said it was “like Christmas morning” to receive a letter from her brother, who has been held in Russia for nearly a year.

Daniel Gershkovich said he was “grateful” to be able to see a glimpse of his brother Evan through court photos, adding that the brothers write to each other once a week, which helped her “I’ll do my best,” he said.

“My letters are getting longer and longer,” Daniel Gershkovic told NewsNation anchor Connell McShane on Thursday. “But for me, it’s a chance to feel like I’m sitting with him and talking to him. And every time a letter comes, it feels like Christmas morning.”

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was arrested in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg last March and has been detained ever since.

His detention was extended from Tuesday until June 30. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said “absolute silence” was needed for a prisoner exchange to take place.

In response, Daniel Gershkovic said there is no difference in his approach to speaking out and keeping Evan’s name mainstream.

“We decided early on that we were going to be loud about this and keep Evan in the news. And we have the support of the Wall Street Journal and the U.S. government, and we will continue to do so.” “I’m going to keep doing that. Let’s just forget about Evan,” she said.

Evan Gershkovich was charged with espionage and detained by the Federal Security Service during a reporting trip to Yekaterinburg.

Former Marine Paul Whelan has been detained in Russia since 2018. Russia also remains in custody of Ars Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist who works for Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

“But what we can do now is keep the spotlight on Evan and make sure no one forgets his story,” she said Thursday.
