Get ready for a WNBA sitcom about women breaking ‘barriers’

NBCuniversal has announced a new sitcom focused on the WNBA, hoping that women will continue to push for a “big win” future and break barriers.

The new 30-minute comedy follows the WNBA rookie just a year after Kate Linklark completed his monumental first season in the league.

“The W” hasn't been filmed yet, but the story surrounds a new player and her inexperienced agents. This is a plot that reflects the life of former WNBA player and producer Chiney Ogwumike, not Clark.

Ogwumike is a WNBA All-Star who played in the league from 2014 to 2023, and has been attracting attention for hiring 24-year-old agent Allison Galer into the league.

Ogwumike and Galer will serve as two of a whopping seven executive producers through Ogwumike's production company Victorious. The former basketball player explained that her company's mission is to “build a future where women in sports can win big.”

The Texas-born athlete pointed to the idea that women are still breaking barriers.

“One of the most valuable lessons I've learned as a professional athlete, broadcaster, and ambassador is that we no longer have to wait for opportunities. We can create them. We have broken barriers, broken ceilings, and the world is ultimately attracting attention. The path we can celebrate our victory.”

Chiney Ogwumike was the 2014 WNBA Rookie of the Year.

Galler described the new company as a way to create “a meaningful opportunity to show that women in sports win at the highest level.”

Sports agents continued to explain new efforts, coupled generally with political activity, claiming that women's sports have a “special ability to capture the heart and mind.”

“Victory will be a go-to vehicle for women's sports stories to reach and captivate global audiences,” Galer added.

The new show is Victorious's first project, but Ogwumike and Galer previously produced a documentary of ESPN films following the 2020 WNBA season during the Covid lockdown.

Carly Mensch and Liz Hulahive were published as authors of “The W.” The pair are most famous for their Netflix shows focused on female wrestlers in the 1980s. “Shine“I ran three seasons between 2017 and 2019.
