Getting Ready to Challenge Cornyn for the Senate Seat

Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s Senate Aspirations

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is confident that “black and brown voters” will play a crucial role in her potential bid to succeed Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) in the upcoming elections. He won his Senate seat during the 2026 midterms, mentioning that his candidacy felt “more of a yes than a no.”

Crockett noted that she won’t have to make a decision about running until after Thanksgiving, and she plans to spend that weekend focused on her strategy.

When asked for an update following the holiday, Crockett expressed optimism: “According to the data, I’m going to win.” However, she emphasized that while data is significant, executing a successful campaign is vital. “We have a state of 30 million people and this is a $100 million race,” she remarked, underlining the necessity for “strong candidates” among other Democrats to help fundraise for the midterms.

“Right now, this is more of a logistical thing than anything else,” she continued, referencing the successful coalition of black and brown voters that emerged in last November’s elections in New Jersey and Virginia. “With regard to these races, I’m a strong candidate. So, I’m in a pretty strong position despite any external opinions.”

Co-host Eugene Daniels suggested he felt more inclined towards a campaign after Crockett’s comments, affirming, “I’m closer to yes than no. I’ll tell you that.”

In a public opinion poll from late October, Crockett, a graduate of the University of Houston and Texas State University, showed promising results after winning the Democratic primary against competitors like Rep. James Talarico (D-Texas) and former Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas). She also outperformed former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) in a hypothetical matchup, even though he hasn’t made a formal announcement regarding his candidacy.

A “special announcement” is scheduled from Crockett next Monday, as reported by the Texas Tribune.

As for Republican contenders against Cornyn, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R-Texas) and Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) are notable names, with Paxton currently leading in a three-way race.
