Ghislaine Maxwell and House Oversight Committee reach an impasse on immunity before Aug. 11 interview

Gislaine Maxwell Responds to Congressional Subpoena

WASHINGTON – Ghislaine Maxwell is invoking the Fifth Amendment in reply to a Congressional subpoena and is discussing the late trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, according to a letter from her lawyer acquired by the Post Office, pending some conditions being met.

Defense attorney David Oscar Marx informed the Republican-led House Oversight Committee that his client’s sworn statement “could jeopardize her constitutional rights and affect her legal claims, potentially influencing the future jury pool.”

“Thus, our initial response is that Maxwell intends to assert her Fifth Amendment rights and will not testify at this moment,” Marx conveyed to Oversight Committee chair James Comer (R-KY).

However, he added, “after further consideration, I would prefer to find a way to collaborate with Congress if we can establish a fair and secure process.”

The requests outlined in the letter include two items that Marx considers non-negotiable. Maxwell has been serving a 20-year sentence in Florida Federal Prison since 2022 for conspiracy to abuse minors with Epstein. Before that, she spent almost two years in a Brooklyn detention facility.

The committee also needs to provide the questions beforehand, Marx noted, “to help identify relevant documents among the millions of pages that could support her response.”

Additionally, Maxwell was reportedly only available to meet with Congress after the conclusion of her Supreme Court appeal and upcoming residency petitions.

“Of course, the alternative would be that if Maxwell received assurances, she would be eager and willing to provide honest and open testimony before Congress in Washington, D.C.,” he remarked.

According to a spokesman for the committee, while they will respond to Maxwell’s attorney shortly, they will not consider offering her immunity for her testimony.
