Giancarlo Stanton injury forces Yankees star to 10-day IL

Despite the offseason he spent working on his body, it wasn’t enough to get Giancarlo Stanton off the injured list.

The Yankees placed Stanton on the 10-day disabled list on Sunday after he strained his left hamstring while running the bases Saturday night.

Infielder Oswaldo Peraza was promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to earn his roster spot.

Stanton had been shedding weight over the offseason to improve his lower body, and the early results were promising, batting .246 with 18 home runs and an OPS of over 120 in 69 games.

But the 34-year-old grimaced Saturday night as he rounded third base to score from second on Gleyber Torres’ double, and by Sunday morning he was undergoing imaging tests to determine the extent of his hamstring tightness.

Stanton missed six weeks last season with a left hamstring injury and missed just over a month in 2020 with the same injury.

He likely would have filled in for Stanton had Jasson Dominguez not been placed on the Triple-A disabled list with a serious oblique injury that is expected to keep him out for two months.

Instead, the Yankees brought back Peraza, but he missed the start of the season with a tight shoulder and has struggled since returning, batting just .178 with a .528 OPS.

The Yankees will likely use a variety of players in the rotation at the DH position, primarily Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, and maybe even use Trent Grisham a little more in center field.
