Giannis Antetokounmpo’s puzzling ‘New York’ remark during Bucks uncertainty

Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo recently stirred the pot during a late-night Q&A session on social media, raising a few eyebrows in the process.

The former NBA MVP transitioned from Saturday to Sunday when he engaged with fans, and at one point, he answered a question with a simple, yet intriguing, “New York.”

This seemingly casual remark has caught the attention of many, particularly as discussions around trade rumors and his future with the Bucks heat up. Mentioned by Chris Haynes of NBA Newsbreaker, this could have broader implications.

Whether he intended to spark speculation or not, the comment has many speculating about a potential trade request.

Antetokounmpo, standing at 6-foot-11, had a tough postseason, getting knocked out in five games against the Indiana Pacers during Milwaukee’s first round. His journey ended unexpectedly as the Bucks faced the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals starting Wednesday.

His recent interactions online have only fueled speculation about interest from teams like the Knicks and the Nets. It’s pretty common for big names like Antetokounmpo to attract attention when trade talks arise.

Brian Lewis from the Post has reported on the Nets’ keen interest in him, noting they have amassed significant draft assets to pull off such a trade.

A meeting is scheduled between the Bucks and Antetokounmpo next week, where they’ll discuss the direction the team should take moving forward.

This meeting comes at a time when concerns are growing regarding the team, particularly following point guard Damien Lillard’s Achilles injury. He’s set to turn 35 in July and might miss the entire upcoming season, compounded by the Bucks’ third straight first-round playoff exit, raising questions about the aging roster and its assets.

Antetokounmpo, who averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists this season, hasn’t officially requested a trade. But he seems open to exploring his options—perhaps as hinted by Haynes.

Turning 31 in December, he has three years remaining on contracts averaging around $54 million and $58 million for the next two seasons, with a player option exceeding $60 million in 2027-28.

If he does become available, it’s likely that just about every team in the league would show interest.
