Giants Fall Short Against Saints

NEW ORLEANS – The Giants faced a frustrating 26-14 loss to the Saints on Sunday at the Superdome, primarily due to a disappointing pass rush.

Their defensive front was expected to be strong, yet they managed to put little pressure on Saints quarterback Spencer Lattler. Reports indicate he was only hit once during the game.

This performance is particularly disappointing for players like Brian Burns, Kavon Thibodeaux, and rookie Abdul Carter, alongside Pro Bowler Dexter Lawrence II.

The lack of a pass rush had significant consequences, allowing the Saints to convert third downs successfully, finishing 15-7.

“We never really got into the game,” Burns noted sadly.

He added that Lattler’s quick release and frequent short passes contributed to their struggles.

“It felt like we had a chance early,” Burns said, reflecting on the game. “We took the lead, which made us think it could go our way. But then they turned things around and took control.”

“We still need to find a way to pressure the quarterback,” he continued. “Our defense has to improve.”

Throughout the game, the Giants were stopped on five different occasions, succeeding on just three of those attempts.

In a post-game discussion, head coach Brian Daboll faced numerous queries about his decision-making, particularly regarding a fourth-down call.

“That was the choice we made,” Daboll stated. “We went for it on a lot of fourth downs and wanted to pin them back. I rely on analytics and others in making those decisions. Ultimately, it’s my choice.”

The Giants suffered a setback when they intercepted a pass intended for Jevon Holland due to a pass interference penalty by cornerback Deonte Banks, their first-round pick in 2023. Ratler connected with Chris Olave, who then got intercepted.

However, the resulting penalty cost them 25 yards.

Later, Daboll expressed some support for Banks, stating there was “trust” in both Banks and Cordale Flott.

“He made some positive plays, but it just wasn’t enough,” Daboll said.

When asked about the issue of penalties, Daboll emphasized the need for improving their techniques. “Our defensive coaches work on that consistently, and I need to stay informed as we address it,” he added.

After previously defeating an unbeaten Chargers team, this loss to the Saints was a letdown for the Giants.

“That’s the beauty of the NFL,” left tackle Andrew Thomas remarked. “Every inch matters. If you keep turning the ball over, you won’t give yourself a fair shot.”
