Giants acquire Xavier Gipson after a significant fumble by the Jets

Xavier Gipson’s Move to the Giants

Xavier Gipson is the newest player to make a surprising transition between the Jets and the Giants this summer.

After being let go by the Jets due to a fumble on a kickoff return during their season opener, Gipson was claimed by the Giants on Thursday. He’s set to join their roster as a receiver and return specialist.

In the first week of the season, the Giants turned to gunners Orszewski and Wondale Robinson for kickoff returns. Robinson actually managed two returns, totaling 41 yards, while avoiding Orszewski, who is often considered a riskier option.

However, Robinson, who is the second preferred receiver, has now found himself on the injury list with an ankle issue. It’s a tricky situation—adding depth can sometimes lead to unforeseen complications.

Remember Gipson’s earlier performance when he returned a punt for a game-winning touchdown at the 2023 season opener? That was the game where Aaron Rodgers suffered his Achilles injury. Gipson averaged 8.9 yards per punt return and 26 yards on kick returns, plus he caught 27 passes for 268 yards with a touchdown.

Olszewski is also listed as a punt returner, adding another layer to the team’s strategy.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn had a solid streak of 145 consecutive punt catches without a fumble during training camp, which is quite impressive. But with Gipson’s release, it’s clear that mistakes can weigh heavily on a team’s culture.

Meanwhile, the Jets signed a rookie cornerback and added him to the practice squad after hoping he would return after the Giants released him from their 53-man roster. Shortly after, the Giants picked up linebacker Zaire Barnes, another former Jets draft pick.

In terms of injuries, Andrew Thomas practiced Thursday at 11 AM, but the Giants were focused on other preparations. He’s set to practice again on Friday, which will help determine if he can play after his surgery last October.

On a brighter note, Robinson (ankle) and WR Malik Neighbors (back) were back on the training field. Robinson’s condition has improved to limited participation, while Neighbors is now fully back.

Unfortunately, not everything is positive for the receivers; Darius Slayton (groin) was also limited in practice. Additionally, DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches is now listed as limited with a foot injury.

In a lighter moment, DT Dexter Lawrence has returned to practice after welcoming a newborn!

However, LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles has been sidelined with calf injuries, and combined with Micah McFadden’s long-term injury, the Giants are short on linebackers.

Looking ahead, Meadowland’s American Dream is hosting a Legend Brunch with former Giants and Jets players at Marcus Live! before a home game this season. The kickoff is set for September 28th, featuring Bert Oates, with others like Ahmad Bradshaw and Joe Klecko slated for later events. Attendees will enjoy a full breakfast buffet for $65.
