Tragic Shooting in New York City Affects NFL Community
On Monday, a major shooting incident struck close to the heart of sports fans. New York City’s Mayor, Eric Adams, announced in a press conference on Tuesday that the shooter, identified as Shane Tamra, seemed to have targeted the National Football League (NFL), with the filming happening in the same building that houses the league’s offices in Manhattan.
The New York Giants and Jets, whose home games occur just a stone’s throw from the NFL headquarters, expressed their sorrow over the incident. Head coach of the Giants, Brian Daboll, shared his thoughts during a training camp, saying, “You all saw what happened at 345 Park Ave. Tragic. Our thoughts and prayers are here with the Giants, along with those affected by the tragedy.”
Daboll reflected on the heavy atmosphere, stating, “I wish it was a better morning. What happened in the league office yesterday, as an organization, our thoughts and prayers go to every family. But it’s always hard to hear.” Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department confirmed that Tamra referenced the NFL in a handwritten note, where he claimed to suffer from CTE.
The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) responded to the shooting, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including members of the NYPD. Their statement, issued early Tuesday, expressed deep sadness over the tragedy, emphasizing the community connection to 345 Park Avenue. They also extended gratitude to law enforcement for their prompt response.
According to Adams, the shooter had been approaching the NFL headquarters but took an incorrect elevator. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell noted that an NFL employee sustained serious injuries during the attack.
Eventually, Tamra was found deceased on the 33rd floor from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, where he also took the life of another woman. NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tish mentioned that Tamra had a documented history of mental health issues.
