Giants and John Harbaugh said to have reached a contract deal around $100 million

John Harbaugh Joins New York Giants as Head Coach

John Harbaugh has officially been signed as the new head coach of the New York Giants, inking a lucrative five-year, $100 million deal. He expressed his commitment to developing a proud team for the franchise’s dedicated fans.

Initial discussions occurred on Wednesday, but the formal agreement was reached on Saturday, aligning Harbaugh’s contract with that of Andy Reid, head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, as reported.

At 63, Harbaugh is enthusiastic about building a team that resonates with Giants supporters. “This is the New York Football Giants. I can’t wait to get started,” he remarked. He acknowledged the exceptional nature of the fans he’s experienced firsthand, vowing to craft a team that will play in a way that fans can take pride in.

He further shared his excitement about joining the organization, saying, “I’m truly honored to join Maras and Tisch and the entire organization. I’m so excited for the players on this team and look forward to the great things we can accomplish together!”

Reports indicate that Harbaugh will have a direct reporting line to the team owner.

Harbaugh was recently released from his position with the Baltimore Ravens after a robust 18-year tenure, boasting a 180-113 regular-season record. His time there included six AFC North titles, four AFC Championship Game appearances, and a Super Bowl victory. Interestingly, his brother Jim is the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Ravens had a disappointing end to their season, finishing with an 8-9 record and missing the playoffs due to a narrow loss in the final minutes of the season. Following this, Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti decided to part ways with Harbaugh.

Harbaugh quickly emerged as a top candidate during the head coach hiring cycle, leading the Giants to actively pursue him.

The Giants have had a challenging decade, with a record of 55-109-1, second worst in the NFL, just ahead of the New York Jets.

In a mid-season change, the Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll after the team squandered a 10-point lead against the Bears, a game complicated by a concussion suffered by rookie quarterback Jackson Dart. Interim coach Mike Kafka managed a 2-5 record during his tenure.

Daboll, who was named NFL Coach of the Year in his inaugural season when he led the Giants to a playoff spot, ends up with a record of 20-40-1 over four seasons, as each passing year saw a decline in performance.

Meanwhile, Kafka, who won his last two games, interviewed for the full-time position but ultimately was not selected.
