Giants Defense Strategy Under Review
Eight might not be sufficient.
Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen resonates with fans who questioned why Edge Rush players Brian Burns, Kavon Thibodeaux, and rookie Abdul Carter were on the field for only eight out of 70 defensive snaps in the opening week.
“Getting these three on the field is advantageous for us, particularly in specific situations,” Bowen mentioned.
Essentially, it’s simpler to utilize all three pass rushers when the Giants are ahead, compelling the opponent to pass more.
However, if the offense is huddled, which the commanders did not, then it becomes easier to create options on third downs.
Thibodeaux (74%), Burns (67%), and Carter (54%) had less playtime than usual, but there’s a delicate balance between staying fresh and maintaining a tactical edge.
The team will face the Cowboys this Sunday, trying to navigate this ongoing challenge.
“I think factors like tempo may give us more control than we realize,” Bowen stated. “Every week, we’re assessing how we can effectively deploy these three guys. This can evolve significantly from week to week in terms of snap counts and usage.”
One potential adjustment is to allow Carter to take some snaps as an inside linebacker, a position he played for two seasons in college before moving to edge rusher.
It’s notable that the Giants are without injured starter Mika McFadden.
Bowen acknowledged Carter’s diverse skill set, saying, “Abdul has experience playing from the ball, so it’s something we need to factor in. There are versatile ways to utilize him alongside the other two.”
He also noted that Carter made a notable play when he rushed Jaden Daniels.
“In key moments, I want the best available player on the field,” Bowen emphasized.
Bowen doesn’t foresee much change in Carter’s role on special teams, despite his previous performance in blocking punts.
“His standout ability is his knack for the ball,” said Michael Gobriel, special teams coordinator. “Whether it’s against a quarterback or during a punt, his versatility adds tremendous value to the team.”
