Giants Face Consequences After Concussion Protocol Incident

The Philadelphia Eagles, currently 5-2, will take on the struggling 2-5 New York Giants at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday. This matchup marks a rematch of their Week 6 game, where the Giants pulled off a surprising upset, defeating the Eagles 34-17.

However, the aftermath of that game has left the Giants, including their head coach and players, feeling a pinch in their pockets due to a specific incident.

A key moment involved rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, who entered the blue medical tent late in the third quarter for a concussion evaluation. Shortly after Dart was assessed, head coach Brian Daboll peeked into the tent. The excitement around that moment was palpable, as observers noted a lively discussion happening nearby.

It wasn’t just Daboll who was concerned; rookie running back Cam Scatebo also entered the tent during the evaluation. Interestingly, Russell Wilson briefly appeared on a couple of plays, but Dart was cleared to return afterward. Still, post-game, both Daboll and Scatebo reflected on what transpired.

“I apologized to the team doctor,” Daboll mentioned. “We were gearing up for a potential fourth down, and if he could’ve made it back, I would’ve used a timeout. It’s crucial to prioritize player safety.”

The day after, Daboll reiterated his stance, emphasizing that he respects the concussion evaluation process and never wants an unprepared player to return.

Scatebo chimed in, saying he went in to help “calm down” Dart, who he thought might be upset. “I just wanted to reassure him that everything would be okay. Protocols are important for getting back safely.”

In light of these events, Giants owner John Mara acknowledged the ongoing investigation led by the NFL and NFLPA. He expressed the team’s commitment to cooperate fully. Mara mentioned his conversation with Daboll about the incident, reinforcing that while he didn’t believe Daboll intended to interfere, it was inappropriate for him to approach the medical tent.

“We must ensure that player safety protocols are followed without any disruption,” Mara stated.

Recently, the NFL and NFLPA released findings about the incident. While they confirmed that the medical staff adhered to the necessary concussion protocols, they also noted that the Giants breached these guidelines. The entrance of both Daboll and Scatebo into the medical tent created an impression of interference, which was deemed a violation.

Though their actions didn’t impact Dart’s evaluation or treatment, they highlighted a disregard for proper procedure, resulting in fines. The team faced a penalty of $200,000, while Daboll and Scatebo were each fined $100,000 for their roles in the incident.
