Giants did not tell Drew Lock he’s compete for starting job

That’s outrageous. It’s really a bomb.

I wish that were true.

No, the Giants — again, they didn’t — didn’t tempt Drew Lock into signing him by telling him he was going to compete with Daniel Jones for the starting quarterback spot.

On Tuesday, Lock agreed to a one-year contract worth $5 million (fully guaranteed) to fill the traditional backup quarterback role.

That’s how the Giants presented Lock with this opportunity, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

The ball started rolling into this “lock coming in to compete for the starting spot” canard when Seahawks general manager John Schneider appeared on 710 Seattle Sports Radio on Thursday. “We basically sold him the opportunity to compete for a starting pitcher spot,” the Giants said.

Lock played for the Seahawks last season.

Schneider went on to say that Lock views this opportunity with the Giants similar to Baker Mayfield signing a one-year deal with the Buccaneers to compete for a starting spot in 2023. .

Mayfield received a one-year contract worth $4 million (plus $4.5 million in incentives) and beat out Kyle Trask to become the No. 1 quarterback.

Mayfield led the Bucks to a 9-8 record, good enough to win the NFC South and beat the Eagles in a playoff game, earning him a three-year, $100 million contract.

Why did Schneider say Lock would come to the Giants to compete for the starting job? Do you know?

The Seahawks had hoped to re-sign Lock, who started two games, in 2023. A memorable game was a 20-17 come-from-behind victory over the Eagles on Monday Night Football in which Lock led a 92-yard drive in the fourth quarter and a rookie wide hit. Receiver Jackson Smith-Njiba scored the game-clinching touchdown in the final 30 seconds.

Lock, 27, joined the Giants instead of returning to the Seahawks, but he had made it clear he would be the backup to Jones, who is rehabbing from reconstructive knee surgery.

Schneider pivoted and acquired Sam Howell in a trade with the Commanders on Thursday, which will either compete with Geno Smith for the starting spot or serve as Smith’s backup.

Indeed, as Jones continues his recovery, Lock could have plenty of time in the first-team offense in the spring and summer.

The Giants believe Jones should be back in time for training camp and ready to start the season.

It’s certainly possible that the Giants will take a quarterback in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.

Even if that happens, Jones is expected to be the starter for Opening Day if healthy.
