Giants escape major setback with Micah McFadden's injury

Giants’ Loss: A Mixed Bag of Outcomes

Despite the general sentiment, the Giants’ loss during the first week wasn’t entirely a disaster.

Linebacker Mika McFadden faced worries about a season-ending injury after being taken off the field in an air cast for his right leg in the first quarter. However, he surprisingly returned to the sidelines in the second half.

After undergoing tests on his leg, McFadden is now working towards a recovery timeline. If he continues to struggle with his injury, he could end up on the injured reserve for at least four weeks.

“I think he was pretty worried when he was on the ground, feeling like he might have broken his leg,” coach Brian Daboll mentioned. “But thankfully, there are different factors that we can evaluate.”

The Giants brought in Darius Musau, a promising draft pick from 2024, who stepped up to play 38 snaps in place of McFadden. On his second play, quarterback Jaden Daniels targeted him, resulting in a seven-yard touchdown pass to Zach Ertz.

“It’s tough to see Mika go down,” remarked Edge Brian Burns. “He’s such a valuable part of our defense, even if people don’t always notice. I really hope this isn’t a serious setback for him.”

Currently, McFadden is coming off a season with 100 tackles and is under contract until 2026.

As for special teams, punter Jamie Gillan kicked off the game, but kicker Graham Gano resumed his usual role for the subsequent two kickoffs.

The NFL’s new kickoff rule has players adjusting how they manage kicks conveniently. “Jamie has a good grasp of the new kickoff rule and where to place his kicks,” Daboll noted. “We’ve been training with him and Graham to ensure we’re ready for this first game.”

Receiver Wan’dale Robinson was a surprising choice as a kickoff returner given he hadn’t filled that role in his previous three NFL seasons. He managed returns of 20 and 21 yards, which is respectable.

“Wan’dale is talented at controlling the ball,” Daboll said. “He had chances to make bigger plays, though I wish we could have held our blocks a bit longer.”

Historically, Daboll has made significant lineup shifts between the first and second weeks, including changes on the offensive line. Yet, he insists he hasn’t considered changes for the current offensive line, unless additional injuries – like Andrew Thomas’s foot issue – necessitate it.

Overall, some players, such as left tackle James Hudson and center John Michael Schmitz, allowed considerable pressure on the quarterback during the Commander game. It’s a concern, but there’s still a chance for improvements ahead.
