Giants’ Quarterback Situation Ahead of Season Opener

RANDOVER, Maryland – This Sunday may mark the announcement of all the efforts put forth during the spring, as well as the training camp preparations centered around Jaxson Dart.

Russell Wilson is expected to start as quarterback for the Giants when they kick off their season against the Commanders.

Veteran Jamis Winston is set to be the backup, used only in emergencies. If you’re tuned into the game, keep an eye out for manager Brian Daboll to potentially bring Dart into the mix.

There’s a specialized package usually crafted for quarterbacks that focuses on numerous running plays, forcing defenses to adjust accordingly. At this point, it’s crucial for the coaching staff to seriously consider how Dart fits into their game plan, even if they haven’t fully committed to his role.

Reports indicate that Washington is preparing to see Dart in action during the game.

The Giants picked Dart in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting him as the 25th overall choice.

Back in the spring, Daboll made it clear that Wilson would be the starting quarterback and has stuck to that decision since.

Overall, Wilson, at 36, handled most of the starter snaps during training camp, while Dart primarily took second-team reps. The rookie really shone in preseason games, completing 32 out of 47 passes for 372 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Impressive, right?

Daboll has often thrown surprises Dart’s way, placing him in unexpected scenarios, like running two-minute drills and having him improvise without communication devices during his first preseason. It seems Daboll has been pleased with what he’s seen, which could pave the way for Dart’s inclusion in the season opener.
