Jackson Dart Excites Giants Fans in Preseason Opener
Jackson Dart certainly had Giants fans—and coach John Harbaugh—experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions during the preseason opener against the Vikings.
Even with the potential risk of injury, Dart took to the field on Saturday. However, by the end of the first quarter, he found himself on the turf after taking a hard hit, leading him to the medical tent for concussion testing.
Fortunately, he was back on the field after just two plays and quickly turned a challenging situation into something positive. Dart rolled out from a collapsing pocket and threw a touchdown pass to Malachi Fields, concluding a 14-play drive that served as an exciting kickoff to the season at MetLife Stadium.
Saturday’s game brought back two significant themes from Dart’s rookie season: his knack for making plays outside the conventional script and, of course, concerns about injuries. However, Harbaugh remained composed and didn’t rush into the medical tent, unlike his predecessor, Brian Daboll.
Dart managed to complete 3 out of 4 passes for a total of 26 yards, including two third-down conversions to Isiah Riley, who has seemed to be his go-to target throughout the summer.
Interestingly, Harbaugh chose to start Dart even with left tackle Andrew Thomas absent, leaving the young quarterback’s blind side to second-year player Marcus Mbou. Harbaugh later mentioned on NBC’s pregame show that getting ready for the regular season is crucial. He emphasized the importance of playing a bit in the preseason to adjust to game speed and ensure they are prepared for the first matchup against the Cowboys, describing it as the main priority.
The Giants faced some early challenges, like a botched snap to third-string center Brian Hudson that disrupted a receiver screen play. The pass went awry after Dart caught it, causing further confusion as the ball spiraled awkwardly in the air.
Hudson was filling in for Jon-Michael Schmitz, who is out with a concussion, and backup Lucas Patrick, nursing a knee injury.
Later in the game, during a crucial third-down play, Dart attempted to scramble following a pump fake but lost his balance on a cutback attempt and was sacked by Dallas Turner, who had beaten Mbou.
After losing a series, Dart returned against backup players from the Vikings. During his absence, James Winston stepped in, quickly setting up a third-and-18 situation after completing a 40-yard screen pass to Devin Singletary. Dart, however, managed to convince the coaching staff of his readiness, walking back onto the field to continue the game.
