Meet Jermaine Elemonor and Dexter Lawrence.
It happened on the field early in the Giants’ first practice of training camp on Wednesday, and it didn’t end well for the veteran offensive lineman.
“It was a big hit,” El-Emnoor said Thursday. “It felt like I’d been hit by a truck.”
Although there were initial concerns that it may have been a serious injury (El Munour left the field clutching his right side), the Giants were relieved by manager Brian Daboll’s one-word update on El Munour’s health.
“No big deal,” Daboll said.
This gave the Giants a moment of relief.
El Emnoor said he suffered “severe bruising” to his ribs.
He was able to take part in individual workouts on the second day of camp, and the 29-year-old believes he won’t miss much more.
“I tried to stop the attack, but Dex apparently thought he’d caught him, so he lowered his shoulder, and it just so happened that he lowered his shoulder onto my rib cage,” Elemnor said. “So it was the least pleasant pain I’ve ever experienced.”
“It’s not fun. Not fun at all. Not the most fun thing I’ve ever had.”
El Emnore, who signed a two-year, $14 million contract this offseason, will be the Raiders’ starting right tackle in 2023 and has position versatility as an eight-year veteran.
With Evan Neal still recovering from ankle surgery and on the physically unable to play list, Eluemunor, who has been the starter at left guard all spring, will step in as the starter at right tackle.
“I’m going to do whatever it takes for the team,” El-Emnour said. “I’m just happy to be here, so [Daboll] and [general manager] Joe [Schoen] Now that I’m here, wherever they need me, I’ll play there.”
Josh Ezeudu started at right tackle after Eluemunor did not participate in team practice on Thursday.
Daniel Jones is recovering well from a surgically repaired right ACL.
On one play that broke down, Jones was forced out of the pocket and took an angle to his right and ran.
He had enough speed and confidence in his right knee that he was able to step out and run past linebacker Bobby Okereke down the sideline.
One change this summer has been a significant reduction in 7-on-7 drills, as Daboll wants his team to work as much as possible with 11-on-11 teamwork.
Daboll hopes this will help Jones be better prepared for the regular season.
“We’re going to do more 11-on-11, just to get a feel for the pocket,” Daboll said. “Move around. It’ll be good to get him out there and get a little feel for the rush.”
TE Lawrence Cager made his second touchdown catch in the same practice.
This time he dropped back to catch Jones’ fastball over the middle.
Another tight end, Daniel Bellinger, caught the scoring pass thrown by Tommy DeVito.
