John Mara Announces Cancer Diagnosis
John Mara, the co-owner, CEO, and president of the New York Giants, revealed on Monday that he has been diagnosed with cancer. The 70-year-old executive shared this personal news via social media.
“I was recently diagnosed with cancer and am following the treatment plan recommended by an outstanding team of doctors,” he stated. Mara expressed that he feels strong and optimistic, believing in a positive outcome. He plans to remain actively involved with the team during his treatment and emphasized the incredible support he has from his personal and professional circles.
In light of his condition, Mara has requested privacy while he undergoes treatment.
A Legacy in the Giants Organization
John Mara joined the Giants in 1991 as a legal advisor and later took on roles including Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. His father, Wellington Mara, was the team owner until 2005. Under Mara’s leadership alongside co-owner Steve Tisch, the Giants secured two Super Bowl titles, notably led by Eli Manning against the New England Patriots.
It’s interesting to note that Mara represents the third generation of the family to own the team. His grandfather, Tim, founded the Giants in 1925, and after Tim passed away in 1959, Wellington and Jack Mara took over the ownership.
The Giants are considered one of the oldest franchises in the NFL, alongside the Chicago Bears.
