Giants’ GM Joe Shane Makes Strategic Call in Draft Preparations
Joe Shane, the general manager for the Giants, anticipated the outcome of a recent call, but it was necessary for him to follow through on it. The Giants are actively seeking a long-term solution at quarterback, so due diligence is key.
In a segment of the team’s “Giants Life: 2025 NFL Draft” show released Thursday, Shane stood up and dialed Titans GM Mike Borgonzi, aiming for one last push to secure Miami quarterback Cam Ward.
“Did you wait for this? Are you choosing?” Shane asked Borgonzi with a chuckle. “I had to do that; I had to! Good luck to your guy.” It felt light, casual—like a chat between friends.
Sitting alongside owner John Mara and head coach Brian Daball, Shane confidently expressed, “Tennessee is going to choose me. I think Ward will be here.” It seemed the top picks would align with expectations for the Giants.
Shane noted that just a week before the draft, the winds shifted when a team other than the Browns took the second pick. The Jaguars moved up to claim a dynamic player.
Ultimately, the Giants selected Edge Rusher Abdul Carter from Pennsylvania at third and quarterback Jackson Dart from Ole Miss at 25th.
Hours prior to the draft’s commencement, sources indicated that the Giants were making a final attempt to trade with Tennessee, though the likelihood appeared low.
Jackson Dart emerged as the second QB selected amidst a draft class generally viewed as subpar for that position, with only two quarterbacks chosen in the first round. Meanwhile, Chedur Sanders, once a contender for a top-three pick, surprisingly dropped to the Browns at No. 144 overall, landing in the fifth round.
