Giants on track for historically bad interception drought

The first commercial spacewalk took place more recently than the Giant's previous interception.

It's been 68 days and nine games since the Giants' only interception of the season. It was an interception by rookie linebacker Darius Muasau in the meaningless final three minutes of a season-opening 22-point loss to the Vikings.

“That statistic alone is mind-boggling,” safety Jason Pinnock told the Post. “in [10] A few weeks? This is crazy. ”

How crazy is this?

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Raiders' defense in 2017 went 10 consecutive games (357 passes) without an interception, setting a modern NFL record (since 1933).

A year later, the 49ers and Cardinals each endured eight-game droughts, but the Giants overshadowed them. The Giants are scheduled to return from this week's bye against the Buccaneers on Nov. 24 in an effort to avoid ties to their questionable history.

Is there an opportunity there?

“There's not enough. I think we need more,” defensive coordinator Shane Bowen said. “That's something we have to keep working on. We have to find a way.”

Adding salt to the wound, former Giants captain Xavier McKinnie tied for the NFL lead with six interceptions in his first season with the Packers. The Giants, Browns (1 game), and Jets (2 games) have a combined total of four games, but the Browns and Jets' active games only cover four and five games, respectively.

Asked this week about losing McKinney to free agency, general manager Joe Schon pointed to second-round pick Tyler Nubin to replace him.

“He's one of the few rookies who plays 99 percent of the time defensively,” Schoen said. “He leads the rookies in tackles, so I’m excited for him.”

On the surface, the lack of interceptions doesn't make sense.

Not just because of erratic plays like receiver slips, tipped passes, and Hail Marys at the end of the half, but because of general football, with the Giants leading the NFL in sacks with 36 and the pass rush and secondary working together. This is because there was a logic. I have it in my hand.

So if the Giants are swinging the quarterback around, shouldn't there be bad decisions or rushed throws?

“They're just throwing the ball good. We're not getting to them. That's the best way I can answer that,” defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence said. “I think we need to be more creative. [takeaways] This is to let the offense have short fields and not worry about driving long fields. It's our responsibility to go get the ball, so we have to do it. ”

The Giants have intercepted 251 passes since their last interception, more than 100 fewer passes than the Raiders have defended during their record-setting streak.

Opponents decided it wasn't worth the risk of getting the ball up in the air when there was little resistance from the NFL's worst rushing defense (5.3 yards per carry).

“It starts with making sure we stop the escape,” Bowen said. “We’ve got to catch them in some passing situations, create some advantageous situations where we can cover in a hurry, play with vision and influence the quarterback.

“Hopefully the ball rolls into the air and we can catch it. We have to create those opportunities for ourselves. And when they express themselves, we You have to be able to do that.”

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is intercepting 2.6 percent of his passes, his highest mark since 2021 and the 11th highest among NFL starters.

So, the next match might be the deciding factor.

Last year, the Giants had similar late-season personnel with the exception of McKinney, leading the NFL in takeaways and finishing third in interceptions (18).

Rookie Muasau has been a healthy scratch twice this season, and no one is better known to most Giants fans than Jared Isaacman, who flew a 460 over Earth on September 12, four days after Muasau's interception. He is a billionaire who made history as the first non-astronaut to walk the mile. .

Of course, this year's Giants had significantly higher zone coverage under Bowen (63 percent of snaps, per Pro Football Focus) and blitzed less often (28.2 percent) than they did under Wink Martindale.

There's still not enough reason.

“It’s hard to tell,” cornerback Cordale Flotte said. “But there's no doubt about it. We're getting close. They're going to come. We're not going to rush them. We're going to be here when they come to attack them. .”
