Giants Prospect in ICU Following Fatal Car Crash
A prospect for the San Francisco Giants is currently in intensive care at a hospital in the Dominican Republic after a tragic car accident early Monday morning in San Pedro de Macoris that claimed the lives of three individuals.
Antonio Jimenez, 24, sustained serious injuries, including a fractured femur and vertebrae, along with multiple lacerations. This incident involved a collision between an SUV and two scooters outside the Altis telecommunications company.
While specific details surrounding the accident remain somewhat vague, the Giants organization has issued a statement acknowledging the unfortunate event. They mentioned, “We are aware of a tragic car accident involving one of our players, Antonio Jimenez, and are gathering further information. Out of respect for everyone affected, we will not be commenting further at this time as the investigation is ongoing.”
The three victims were identified as Alfredo Garcia, 28, Israel Carpio, and Victor de Jesus, all of whom died at the scene, according to reports.
Jimenez played for the Sacramento River Cats, the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate, last season and also participated in the Dominican Republic Winter League. The team Toros del Este expressed their sorrow over the incident, stating, “We wish to pray for the repose of our pitcher Antonio Jimenez, who suffered multiple injuries in a tragic car accident,” and extended condolences to the families affected.
Beginning his professional career with the Rays in 2018, Jimenez joined the Giants organization last season. Notably, he has a minor league record of 31 wins and 13 losses, along with a 3.43 ERA and 471 strikeouts. However, he has yet to make an appearance in a major league game.
