New York Giants Cut Kicker After Struggles
The New York Giants are grappling with significant issues across their game this season, and recently, they decided to address one specific area: the kicking game. On Tuesday, the team announced they had waived kicker Younghoe Koo after an up-and-down tenure with them.
Koo, a former Pro Bowler, had a disappointing performance in a recent 29-21 loss to the Washington Commanders, where he missed two field goals. Overall, he converted 4 out of 6 attempts during his five games with the Giants.
In a bizarre moment just a few weeks prior, Koo faced an unusual challenge when his foot got stuck in the grass during a game against the New England Patriots. This unfortunate incident led to a failed kick, crucially impacting the game while the Giants were trailing.
“As I approached the ball, it felt like it was sliding down because of the cold,” Koo explained, reflecting on the awkward moment. “I couldn’t kick it properly, so I ended up pulling back.” He acknowledged that by the time Jamie managed to catch the ball, it was too late to make the attempt.
This season has been notably rough for the Giants, with mistakes and missed opportunities characterizing their performance. Currently, they rank 12th in receiving yards but are struggling with 22nd in points scored. Defensively, they sit at 29th for points allowed and 30th for total yards allowed. Throughout the season, the franchise has cycled through three kickers, including Koo, alongside Graham Gano and Jude McAtamny, while utilizing Jamie Gillan and Cameron Johnston for punting duties.
As the season approaches its conclusion, the Giants hold a record of 2 wins and 12 losses, with just three games left to play. If they maintain their current win total, it would mark the fifth instance of finishing with four or fewer wins since their last Super Bowl victory in 201. Notably, they have only managed to make playoff appearances twice within that timeframe.
