Giants’ Head Coaching Search Takes Shape

As the Giants begin their search for a new head coach, a few clear trends are emerging.

One significant factor seems to be experience.

Next week, the Giants are expected to meet with two former head coaches: Mike McCarthy, who has led the Packers and Cowboys, and Raheem Morris, known for his time with the Buccaneers and Falcons.

These two join other candidates that include Kevin Stefanski, the former Browns head coach who interviewed on Wednesday, and Vance Joseph, who is currently the Broncos’ defensive coordinator. Joseph’s availability for a Zoom interview lasts until Saturday, as per NFL regulations.

Interestingly, McCarthy met with Giants owner John Mara and executive Kevin Abrams a few days before being hired as the Cowboys head coach back in January 2020. At that time, the Giants opted for Joe Judge instead.

Currently, McCarthy is coming off a separation from the Cowboys after last season, marking his second career gap year. He recently praised the Giants’ rookie quarterback, Jackson Dart, during an episode of “The Pat McAfee Show,” which does carry some credibility based on his successful track records with quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott.

Morris, who hails from New Jersey and attended Irvington High, was let go by the Falcons despite ending their season on a four-game winning streak. It’s worth noting he’s also in line for interviews with the Titans and Cardinals.

Both Morris and Joseph are recognized as minority candidates; Antonio Pierce, a former Giants star and Raiders head coach, is also being considered.

Due to the Rooney Rule, the Giants are required to conduct in-person interviews — not virtual — with at least two minority candidates before making a hiring decision.

Additionally, the Giants have asked to interview Lou Anarumo, the Colts’ defensive coordinator.

With wild-card playoff teams currently unavailable for interviews, it’s possible that the Giants haven’t reached out to candidates like Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley or Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, among others.

Reports indicate that the Giants have already interviewed interim head coach Mike Kafka this week. This means that Kafka and Stefanski, who stepped in after Brian Daboll faced a tough start at 2-5, didn’t have to share the building awkwardly on Wednesday.

Kafka, who has interviewed for head coaching roles with eight teams since 2023, brings a minority background as someone of Puerto Rican descent. He is familiar with the Giants, which differentiates him from some other candidates.

Meanwhile, interim defensive coordinator Charlie Bullen is also being considered for the position as the team explores various coaching options. Kafka has emphasized how Bullen has enhanced communication and clarified roles during his five-game stint.

General manager Joe Schoen has indicated a willingness to allow contracted assistants to pursue lateral moves to other teams on a “case-by-case” basis, hinting at a potential focus on continuity and strategic growth as they move forward.
