Giants Name Russell Wilson Starting Quarterback

In a press conference held Wednesday, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll officially announced that Russell Wilson will be the team’s starting quarterback as training camp kicks off.

At 36, Wilson is stepping in after Jaymis Winston, who recently signed as a free agent. “These guys compete here, but Russ is our starter,” Daboll stated.

Last season, Wilson played with the Pittsburgh Steelers, achieving a 6-5 record over 11 games. He completed 63.7% of his passes for 2,482 yards, tossing 16 touchdowns and five interceptions.

The Giants’ decision to bring in Wilson is part of a broader strategy to revamp the quarterback position after a challenging 3-14 season last year. Daniel Jones, Drew Locke, and Tommy DeVito all saw starts last season, but DeVito remains the only one left on the roster as he competes for a spot. The Giants signed Wilson to a one-year contract worth $10.5 million, aiming for him to lead the team as the starter.

As Wilson gets ready for week one, there’s already talk among fans about the possibility of Dart stepping in if Wilson struggles to perform.

General manager Joe Shane reflected on past quarterback situations, recalling how Patrick Mahomes played only one game at the end of his rookie season alongside current offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. He also mentioned that Josh Allen had a similar experience during his rookie year with Daboll at the Buffalo Bills.

Meanwhile, Winston and Dart are competing for backup roles throughout training camp. Last season, Winston appeared in 12 games, starting seven, with a completion rate of 61.1%, totaling 2,121 yards with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Dart had an impressive season at Ole Miss, leading the SEC with a completion percentage of 69.3%, amassing 4,279 yards, 29 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. The Giants acquired him in a deal involving multiple picks, including a second-round pick in 2025.
