Giants trade edge rusher Jordan Phillips to Cowboys

Jourdan Phillips and the Giants formed a strange alliance.

The Washington Post confirmed late Wednesday night that the team traded the defensive tackle and a seventh-round draft pick to the Cowboys in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

This is a rare trade between NFC East rivals.

Perhaps most infamously, in 1974 the Giants traded a first- and second-round draft pick to the Cowboys to acquire quarterback Craig Morton, who ultimately took seven-time All-Pro defensive tackle Randy White with the second overall pick.

The 31-year-old Phillips is not White, but he is a veteran who has played 120 NFL games, none of which came with the Giants.

Phillips did not participate in most of the offseason workouts after signing a one-year, $1.79 million contract in April.

He has remained a third-team player throughout training camp and faces an uphill battle to survive the cut from 90 to 53 players.

According to spotrac.com, the Giants paid Phillips a signing bonus of $435,000.

The trade shows the Giants confidence in young players at a position where they don’t have many veterans beyond projected starters Dexter Lawrence and Rakeem Nunez-Roche.

Undrafted rookie Elijah Chatman is having a breakout camp as a pass-rush backup to Nunez-Roches to stop the run.

Ryder Anderson, who, like Chatman, joined the team as a rookie tryout in 2022, and 2023 seventh-round draft pick Jordan Riley were ranked above Phillips.

Timmy Horn and 2022 fifth-round draft pick DJ Davidson could benefit from the trade.

Phillips played for the Bills, Dolphins and Cardinals and recorded 24 career sacks.

He played in nine games with Buffalo last season.
