Giants Make Surprising Cuts Ahead of Roster Finalization

Elijah Chatman’s impressive versatility wasn’t enough to secure his spot on the Giants’ roster.

In a move that caught many off guard, Chatman was among the first players cut from the Giants as they trimmed their roster from 90 to 53 on Tuesday.

Chatman, who was drafted in 2024, had been playing as a defensive tackle and had even added fullback duties to his preseason skill set.

Other notable players released include Tommy DeVito, a fan-favorite fourth-string quarterback, tight end Greg Dalcich, cornerback Tre Hawkins, offensive guard Jake Kubas, receiver Lil Jordan Humphrey, and Dante “Turbo” Miller, as reported by various sources.

At one point, teams inquired about the availability of receivers Jalin Hyatt, tight end Daniel Bellinger, and quarterback Jameis Winston, but were informed that all three would remain on the final roster.

Dalcich had an impressive preseason, tying for the most touchdown catches in the league with three.

Tre Hawkins, a standout at rookie camp in 2023, started strong but struggled with injuries, ultimately failing to meet expectations.

Kubas started as a top contender for a starting position when camp began but lost ground during preseason games, which, well, can happen. He had previously joined the team as an undrafted rookie and appeared in five games last season, starting three of them.

Humphrey, a seasoned player in his sixth year, managed to catch Jackson Dart’s first unofficial touchdown pass, though he couldn’t secure a place on the roster.

Miller showed promise as a dual-threat running back and helped out on special teams, but the Giants’ depth at running back—with Tyron Tracy Jr. as the starter, along with rookie Camsquattebo and veteran Devin Singletary—left little room for maneuvering.

Currently, the Giants have 16 positions open on their practice squad and are likely to bring back some players who clear waivers.

Many of these roster moves were first reported by various sports outlets.
