Giants Week 18 report card: Mauling was long-time coming

A review of the Giants' 27-10 home victory over the Eagles on Sunday.

offense

Well, where was most of this season? Tyrod Taylor (23-of-32, 297 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) was all over the field, scrambling 38 yards and rolling out for a better throwing angle. Tough guy. He gained 415 total yards and holding the ball for almost 33 minutes was a win.

Saquon Barkley (18-46) didn't do much in terms of yards, but ran for two touchdowns and had 46 yards receiving.

Wan'Dale Robinson (5-85) showed off his explosiveness with a 33-yard catch-and-run, then showed off his route running with a 26-yard reception.

It will be good to see Sterling Shepard (3-18) see action in his final game in a Giants uniform. Darius Slayton (5-62) scored a 19-yard TD. Shuffling the offensive line allowed just two sacks.

defense

This was a maul with four turnovers, and it had been a long time since we had played against this opponent.

There were five sacks by the Eagles' two quarterbacks (two by Azeez Ojulari), and Jalen Hurts (7-of-16, 55 yards, 1 INT) was ineffective. Xavier McKinney had two interceptions, one from Hurts and one from Marcus Mariota.

In the first quarter, Nick McLeod did a great job of hitting AJ Brown with the ball and forcing a fumble, which Micah McFadden recovered.

Dane Belton blitzed and sacked Hurts for 14 yards.

Bobby Okereke finished strong, dragging Hurts in for a 12-yard sack late in the second quarter.

McFadden had an impressive pass breakup down the field against running back Boston Scott.

Mason Crosby made field goals of 24 and 21 yards, but his 45-yard attempt hit the left upright. Late in the first quarter, Jamie Gillan punted 55 yards, driving the Eagles to their own 9-yard line.

Gillan averaged 45.6 yards on five punts, with four of them inside Philadelphia's 20-yard line.

Gunner Olszewski continued to impress with a 15-yard punt return in the second quarter.

The ever-hustling McFadden ran down a punt return and made a tackle, pinning the Eagles at their own 19-yard line.

coaching

No one can question whether Brian Daboll was able to keep his team playing hard over the final month. Although performances were often unsatisfactory, his team earned points in the final game of the season.

Daboll also ensured Shepard had the targets he needed to move into fifth place on the franchise career acquisitions list. His voice echoed throughout the locker room.

A nice play call by Mike Kafka at the 2-yard line allowed Barkley to come out of the empty backfield for a jet-sweeping TD.

There were a number of blitzes called by Wink Martindale that kept Hearts on the run in the first half.
