Giants Week 7 report card: Yikes

Assessing the Giants' 28-3 loss to the Eagles on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

offense

How much time do you have? There was football brutality all over the field. Daniel Jones (14-of-21, 99 yards) was benched early in the fourth quarter. Before that, he got beat up (seven sacks) due to poor protection and often holding the ball too long.

The longest play of the day was 14 yards, but that wasn't enough. The running game was bad (76 yards). The return of Malik Nabors (4 wins, 41 losses) was meaningless. Get well soon, Andrew Thomas! Josh Sweat beat Thomas' replacement Josh Ezeudu (and Daniel Bellinger) for a first-quarter sack.

An 11-yard goal to Darius Slayton was called back by a downfield foul penalty on center John Michael Schmitz, and the game was rough.

His third-down conversions (3-of-14) were abysmal. Sit down about this. The Giants gained 10 first downs and gained 119 total yards. oh yeah.

defense

Saquon Barkley's numbers (17-of-176, 1 TD) look special, but 96 of those yards came on two runs. That is Saquon. He's a big playmaker. It's awful that they allowed 269 rushing yards, but this wasn't a fair fight.

The Eagles couldn't block the defense — Dexter Lawrence had two sacks and Brian Barnes and Azeez Ojulari each had one — but Jalen Hurts (10 of 14, 114 yards) I just had to make it work. He threw four passes in the second half.

Nick McLeod was completely defeated by AJ Brown on a 41-yard TD connection. CB Deonte Banks didn't have much power and was unable to tackle Hurts on a scramble.

Rookie CB Drew Phillips was solid. He dropped DeVonta Smith for a 2-yard loss.

Matthew Adams was supposed to be sacked and recovered unscathed, but inexplicably allowed Hurts to escape and allow a 16-yard run.

Matt Haak beat coverage for a 64-yard punt, and Cooper Dejean broke a tackle and returned it 28 yards.

Early in the second quarter, Haak hit a 26-yard punt that went wide. He then recorded a 50-yard no-return. Ihimir Smith-Marsett canceled out the punt and sent it wide.

He had a great 12-yard punt return.

Adams was called for a false start penalty on the punt coverage team.

Tomon Fox collided with punter Braden Mann in the closing minutes and was given a roughing the kicker penalty.

Greg Joseph attempted the only field goal from 38 yards.

coaching

There's nothing wrong with benching Jones early in the fourth quarter. We couldn't accomplish anything offensively.

Brian Daboll's pitching decisions were poor. Of course, he didn't know that his team couldn't block anyone.

Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen may have to be tougher on players who don't consistently give their best efforts.

His team got to the quarterback, but allowed 6.0 yards per rushing attempt and had too many big runs.
