Giants win against Cardinals with a game-ending interception return, improving to 3-1

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of their Super Bowl-winning team from 1986, the current Giants made a fitting tribute by clinching the game with a pick-6.

Deonte Banks, who faced a challenging start to his NFL career earlier in the offseason, bounced back impressively after being called for a crucial pass interference penalty. He intercepted a fourth-down pass and returned it 98 yards for a touchdown just as time ran out, sealing a 36-24 win over the Cardinals.

With just seconds left in the game and trailing by three points, the Cardinals faced a fourth-and-goal situation at the 4-yard line. Jacoby Brissett aimed for Michael Wilson, but Banks anticipated the play perfectly, stepping in front and taking off for a long run, much to the excitement of fans who now see him as a promising starter rather than a draft disappointment.

I think if you were wondering what a classic Jameis Winston game looked like, you definitely got a taste of it.

Winston, seemingly frustrated by the pressure to deliver highlight-reel moments, ended up throwing three touchdowns and two interceptions during the game at MetLife Stadium, leading the Giants to their first 3-1 start since 2022 and their first three home wins since 2008 in the old Giants Stadium.

While the Giants held a slim three-point lead in the fourth quarter, running back Najee Harris, who had previously contributed a 2-point conversion, fumbled during a push. This raised concerns, especially considering it marked the fifth fumble by the Giants’ top three running backs in just four games.

However, the Giants’ defense held firm, thanks to Abdul Carter, who stepped up in the absence of Brian Burns. Carter recorded back-to-back hits on the quarterback, forcing a three-and-out.

Rookie linebacker Arvell Reese came up big in the second quarter, making three pivotal plays for the defense.

Reese pressured Brissett, leading to an underthrown interception that Greg Newsome II caught. He also made a crucial tackle on Tyler Allgeier to force a punt, and he secured his first career interception off a batted pass, giving the Giants a short field that quickly resulted in a touchdown pass to Malik Nabers.

Winston tossed two touchdown passes in rapid succession later in the second quarter but faltered with interceptions on his next two drives. Fans even called for newly-acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy to take his place, as he was surprisingly involved during the game.

Winston finally snapped a dry spell of 23 consecutive possessions without a touchdown since stepping in for the injured Jaxson Dart. He orchestrated a seven-play, 56-yard drive that brought them closer after a 14-6 deficit.

Interestingly, he relied on his legs more than expected. Winston drew a facemask penalty on one scramble and, while making another play extend, he found Malachi Fields for a 12-yard touchdown.

Just moments after a quick interception by Reese, Winston connected with Nabers for a touchdown, marking the receiver’s first score since recovering from ACL surgery, and putting the Giants ahead, 19-14.

Late in the third quarter, Winston found Theo Johnson for another touchdown, with Johnson managing to secure the catch despite previous issues with drops. Harris added two more points with a successful conversion.

Kicker Dominic Zvada continued his impressive streak by making all three of his field goal attempts, bringing his total to 9-for-9 in his career, including a long 52-yarder with just over two minutes remaining.

This put the Giants in a nerve-wracking situation, clinging to a six-point lead with 67 yards defensively to protect. The previous two games had ended with interceptions in the end zone, adding to the tension as they worked to secure this victory.
