Gilbert Arenas recently shared with Dan Patrick that his son, Aliya, is “doing very well” after a serious car accident in late April that left him in a medically induced coma.
Aliya was driving a Tesla Cybertruck in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley when he lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a fire hydrant.
Arenas reassured listeners in his interview that despite being in a coma, his son wasn’t seriously injured.
He also expressed gratitude towards a group of good Samaritans who rescued Aliya from the car post-accident, referring to them as “angels.”
“What I was most concerned about was my limbs being broken or any burns,” Arenas stated. “He was fortunate to have someone hear the crash and help him early in the morning.”
Arenas elaborated, noting that Aliya seemed stronger than expected. “He was awake for a bit and then became agitated, which led them to place him in a coma to help with his breathing. I think he was in the car for about 10 to 12 minutes… it was quite the ordeal.”
The former NBA star highlighted his son’s good spirits throughout the ordeal, sharing a light-hearted moment about Aliya joking during his time at the UCLA hospital.
Aliya is aiming to play college basketball at USC soon.
Arenas joked about his son’s choice of school, saying, “He wrote it. Sorry to join UCLA,” but added that they’re currently focused on his recovery. Aliya was discharged from the hospital last week and is reportedly on track for a full recovery.
