Mom Surprised by Daughter’s Reaction to Landline Phone Gift

A mother recently stirred up quite a conversation on social media after sharing her young daughter’s unexpected delight in receiving a landline phone for Christmas. Meg Kate McCallany is one of several parents in Illinois who have chosen to delay giving their kids smartphones until at least the eighth grade. Her 8-year-old daughter, Maddie, was thrilled with the pink princess phone gifted by her grandmother, and videos capturing her joy quickly gained attention online.

During an appearance on the show “Stories with Martha McCallum,” McCallany expressed her gratitude for her supportive circle of mothers who advocate for waiting as long as possible before introducing smartphones to their kids. They’ve even made a pact to hold off until eighth grade. Interestingly, the children in this group maintain landline phones to connect with one another about their daily lives.

Why Some Parents Are Hesitant to Give Kids Smartphones

“I think it’s fantastic,” McCallany commented. “They’re using technology at school, like iPads, all the time. So when they get home, they can call friends on the landline without the distractions of apps or social media.” She noted that this strategy has worked well for her family, with Maddie enjoying the excitement of running to the phone when it rings.

McCallany also mentioned her other child, stating, “My son got a smartwatch when he turned 10, which really works for us.” She felt the gift of the landline phone was perfect for Maddie, allowing her to communicate with friends while sidestepping the temptations of smart devices.

The conversation about children’s social media usage has been a hot topic lately. According to a recent survey, nearly two-thirds of voters and parents are in favor of banning social media access for kids under 16 and taking away cellphones in classrooms. Interestingly, this bill had particularly strong support from Republicans.

Dr. Jonathan Haidt, co-author of “The Amazing Generation,” encourages parents to focus on providing fun, screen-free activities for their children. He noted, “It’s not just about taking away phones. It’s crucial to give kids a fun and engaging childhood, filled with play—especially outdoor and unsupervised play with their peers.”
