A woman from Florida has been convicted for intentionally crashing her car at nearly 100 miles per hour, resulting in the death of her boyfriend just hours after discovering she was pregnant. This case bears a striking resemblance to that of Mackenzie Shirilla, who was previously convicted as the “Hell on Wheels” killer.
Leigha Mumby, aged 25, was driving recklessly, reaching speeds of up to 110 mph, while having an argument with her boyfriend, 22-year-old Daniel Waterman, a New Yorker. The incident occurred in February 2025 when she suddenly swerved left off Interstate 95 in Flagler County and smashed into several trees.
Initially, Waterman fell into a coma and was paralyzed from the neck down due to a broken neck. He managed to tell officials that Mumby had crashed intentionally before passing away from pneumonia in October 2025.
Although Mumby also sustained serious injuries, she has since recovered and gave birth to her baby, whom she was carrying during the crash.
According to Waterman, the argument ensued after Mumby learned about her pregnancy and found out he had been texting another woman.
“She was so furious that she called her best friend to vent, yelling about Daniel texting with someone else,” remarked Assistant State Attorney Melissa Clark during the closing arguments. “When her friend didn’t react as she hoped, she abruptly hung up. That was Leigha Mumby’s state of mind at the time of the accident.”
Mumby’s defense claimed that she wasn’t aware of what caused the crash. Her attorney, Reid Hart, insisted that she wasn’t on a “suicide mission.”
“There’s absolutely no evidence to suggest that she intended to endanger anyone’s life, including her own and her unborn child’s,” he stated.
He argued that her attempts to avoid crashing illustrated she did not plan for such an outcome at all.
Following over an hour of deliberation, a jury found Mumby guilty of vehicular homicide and reckless driving causing serious bodily injury. Her sentencing is pending.
This case draws a tragic parallel to Mackenzie Shirilla’s situation, where she was convicted in 2023 of killing her boyfriend and his friend by deliberately crashing into a brick warehouse in Ohio.
At just 17 years old, Shirilla crashed at 100 mph into a wall in Strongsville, Ohio, resulting in the deaths of her boyfriend, 20-year-old Dominic Russo, and their 19-year-old friend Davion Flanagan. The judge labeled her “literal hell on wheels.”
Recently, an Ohio judge dismissed Shirilla’s request to reopen her case, effectively ending her appeals in the state. She is currently serving a sentence of 15 years to life.
