Glen Henry Discusses the Importance of Self-Care in Fatherhood

Glenn Henry’s Journey as a Father and Author

Glenn Henry is recognized for his creative talents—he’s a musician, YouTube influencer, and the author of the forthcoming book Father Yourself First. However, the title that he cherishes the most is being a father. In a recent interview with Crosswalk, he shared insights about the lively atmosphere at home with his wife and their four delightful children, who sometimes join in on his YouTube recordings. In his new book, Henry aims to convey that in order to truly understand fatherhood, one must first embrace the role themselves.

pedestrian crossing: When did you realize you had to write this book?
Glen Henry: It became clear while I was recording YouTube content. I felt the need for this book, although it was often challenging for others to grasp my message.

CW: What has God taught you through this experience?
GH: Writing the book was just part of the journey. I felt like God was revealing more about Himself to me, especially through my experiences as a father and my relationships with loved ones like my wife and kids. It really pushed me to reflect on my patience and effectiveness as a father. If my growth stopped at fatherhood, I felt I was in trouble. I had to expand beyond that role, and writing helped me realize this.

CW: Did you expect to reach 2 million viewers?
GH: Honestly, those numbers can be quite intimidating. My aim isn’t to amass a large audience; it’s more about transforming how people perceive fatherhood. Everyone has a part to play in this narrative. Sure, many gauge success by numbers, but that’s not how I see it. It’s more of a result of the work you put in.

CW: How did you transition from a successful entertainment career to being a stay-at-home dad?
GH: The biggest shift was going from music to fatherhood. I began to recognize that my dedication to music felt like a form of worship, but it also began to feel like idolatry. Being in the spotlight just wasn’t fulfilling for me. When I got home and saw my kids, I was reminded of what really matters in pursuing a relationship with the Father.

CW: What were the downsides of life on the road?
GH: The costs of being in music included travel, logistics, and all that comes with preparing for shows. I would perform just a couple of hours each day, while the rest would involve packing and unpacking, dealing with venues, and whatnot. It hit me that the moments spent with my family in my living room were far more significant than any large stage I’d ever perform on.
