Glen Powell from 'Top Gun: Maverick' shares his reasons for avoiding political discussions: It creates division among people.

Glen Powell Shies Away from Political Discussions

In a recent conversation with Esquire, Glen Powell, known for his role in Twisters, expressed his reluctance to engage in political discussions, citing their divisive nature. He reflected on his upbringing, mentioning that his parents had little interest in politics, and he feels similarly disinterested now.

Powell noted, “Over time, I realized that politics divide people.” He critiqued the tendency of individuals to assert their views forcefully, claiming it leads to unproductive conversations. “I genuinely do not like the discourse,” he added, highlighting a belief that current political discussions are less healthy than they used to be.

He also commented on the challenges of engaging in political conversations, stating, “It’s not presently possible.” While he admires those who actively advocate for their beliefs, Powell feels his focus lies elsewhere.

With a notable acting career over the past decade, starring in films like Top Gun: Maverick and The Running Man, Powell also created a successful football comedy series, Chad Powers, with Michael Waldron.

His avoidance of political commentary seems to echo a growing trend among actors who realize that voicing political opinions often alienates a significant portion of their audience. Dwayne Johnson faced backlash after endorsing Joe Biden and has since pledged to remain politically neutral. He acknowledged, “I’ve learned I’m going to keep my politics to myself,” emphasizing the desire to unify rather than divide.

Similarly, Jennifer Lawrence has reevaluated her stance on political discussions. Previously outspoken against Republicans, she admitted that expressing political views might only worsen the current situation. “We are so divided,” she said, reflecting her change of heart.

Others echo this sentiment, such as Josh Duhamel, who suggested actors avoid political topics to prevent upsetting fans, and Kevin James, who prefers to leave political discourse to those better informed.
