Reflections on Predictions from a Decade Ago

About ten years ago, a radio host laid out “three possibilities” for where America might find itself in the following decade.

Possibility #1: “Slow Decline” — He predicted a time when corruption would essentially be standard and violence would be a constant backdrop. The purchasing power of currency would dwindle, necessitating a downward adjustment of expectations. Lines would blur across various sectors, while drug influx would persist. While institutions would struggle to maintain their effectiveness, they wouldn’t completely collapse.

Possibility #2: “Control” — This scenario involved a moment when the system perceives dissent as a significant threat. At that juncture, those who had been warning or protesting would shift in status from simply ‘wrong’ to ‘dangerous.’ The terminology would transition from opposition to enemy.

Possibility #3: “Wake Up” — Here, the hope was that a grassroots movement would emerge, even if imperfect, rekindling a sense of the nation’s original intent. People would look back and recognize this as a pivotal moment of change.

Reflecting on these predictions, he believes they have gradually manifested. Corruption has become commonplace, and violence does feel like background noise. While our currency is still in use, we find ourselves purchasing less each year, forcing a recalibration of expectations. Borders have become less defined, and the drug problem remains prevalent. Although the system is weakened, it hasn’t crumbled entirely.

He asserts that the second prediction has also come to fruition, particularly during the current administration, where dissent has been silenced under the guise of maintaining order.

The most optimistic prediction, the rise of a grassroots movement to restore order and morality, has surfaced as well, albeit in fragments.

He suggests that all three scenarios have unfolded concurrently, but it’s unclear which ones are still progressing and which are complete. Yet, there’s a sense that the upcoming decade won’t allow the same level of flexibility.

“What will the world look like ten years from now? It won’t be a mix of all three,” he states decisively.

He views the current situation as veering off course and poses a critical choice: “Do you slam on the brakes now, or do you take control and change direction?”
