Even if an earthquake occurred, preparations for the Yankees’ home opener would not stop.
The Bombers were taking batting practice in the Bronx ahead of Friday’s game against the Blue Jays when players were unperturbed by the 4.7-magnitude earthquake that rocked the tri-state area around 11:10 a.m. I went about my business without any hesitation.
Video from Yankee Stadium shows Gleyber Torres continuing to make pregame cuts in the batting cage, even as one person next to the cage stands up in embarrassment as the shaking intensifies, and Yankees coach is shown to have paused throwing the ball to Torres.
Anthony Volpe, who was behind Torres, looked like the ground was shaking.
But business continued as usual while Torres continued to swing.
Catcher Austin Well was among those who felt the shaking on the field.
“The field was shaking,” he said. “I definitely felt that.”
Fans were allowed into the stadium around the time of the quake, and there is no sign that the first pitch, scheduled for 1:05 p.m., will be affected.
