Gleyber Torres out of Yankees’ lineup vs. Mets amid awful slump

Gleyber Torres, who has been in particularly poor form throughout this season, is taking a rest day.

The Yankees’ starting second baseman was left out of the lineup for Wednesday’s Subway Series finale at Citi Field, with Oswaldo Cabrera starting at second base and DJ LeMahieu starting at third base.

Torres has just two hits in 29 at-bats over his past nine games and looked particularly bad on Tuesday, struggling in every aspect and being called into manager Aaron Boone’s office following a 9-7 loss to the Mets.

The Yankees were without Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo and were looking to players like Torres to perform well, but Torres went 0-for-4 with one walk and one strikeout in the first inning with the bases loaded and no outs.

His defense was also an issue, as he made an error on a sharp grounder by Brandon Nimmo, allowing a run and committing his 12th error, the most by a second baseman.

Torres’ feet also were an issue, as he couldn’t run over a soft grounder hit by Francisco Lindor in the eighth inning to make an easy out on what might have otherwise been a close game.

After the game, Torres said he felt tightness in his groin, which kept him out of last week’s game.

It was not immediately clear if Torres’ rest was due to a groin injury or his recent play.

The Yankees were scheduled to face left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea, who the right-handed hitter Torres normally handles well.
