“To win in this competitive market, we must optimize for speed and excellence,” GM spokesman Kevin Kelly said in an emailed statement. “This includes operating efficiently, ensuring we have the right team structure and focusing on our top priorities as a business. Meanwhile, GM and other automakers are trying to navigate the uncertainty surrounding the transition to electric vehicles in the U.S. and around the world, determining where to invest capital and how quickly the transition will occur. .
The company needed to develop and update its gasoline engine models while investing in EV batteries, assembly plants, minerals and other components for next-generation electric vehicles.
The layoffs come after more than 1,000 salaried employees in GM's software and services division were laid off in August.
GM had 76,000 salaried employees worldwide as of the end of last year. This includes approximately 53,000 salaried employees in the United States.
In April, about 5,000 General Motors white-collar employees accepted the company's takeover offer, which General Motors said at the time was enough to avoid layoffs.
The company offered acquisitions to white-collar employees with at least five years of service and global executives with at least two years of service.
Additionally, GM said at the time that it could not completely rule out the possibility of future layoffs, saying “involuntary separations are not being considered at this time.”
