GM recalls more than 90K vehicles over transmission issue

General Motors recalls more than 90,000 vehicles in response to potential transmission issues that could increase the risk of a collision.

In a recall report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the automaker said that it could handle “excess” if it could handle 2020-2021 CADILLAC CT4, 2020-2021 CADILLAC CT5, 2019-2020 Cadillac CT6 and 2020-2022 CHEVROLET CAMARO CAMARO CAMARO CRONASSION. And then there's a “instant” lock-up of the wheel in a “rare case.”

According to the NHTSA recall report, short lockups of the wheels while the recalled vehicle is in motion can result in “an increased risk of crashes.”

“This recall will only include vehicles equipped with a 10-speed transmission,” the report says of the recalled vehicle. “Vehicles equipped with other transmissions will not be affected by this recall.”

“Customer safety is a top priority for the entire GM team,” GM told Fox Business in a statement, “were working to remedy this issue through software updates as soon as possible.”

According to the recall report, there was one report of suspected accidents that could be related to a defective valve.

Software updates to address the issue will prevent that from happening by “detecting approximately 10,000 miles of excess wear before a wheel lockup condition occurs” and “positioning power transmission in the fifth gear until the next key cycle.”

Dealers will install the transmit control module monitoring software to customers for free.

According to an NHTSA report, owners of vehicles affected by the recall can expect to receive a letter by email starting April 21st.

According to NHTSA, the automaker has incorporated “new transmission control software” into production of the Model 2021 Cadillac CT6, the Model 2022 Cadillac CT4 and CT5, and the Model 2023 Chevrolet Camaro.
