GM slashing over 1K salaried jobs at software, service units

General Motors said Monday it was laying off more than 1,000 full-time employees across its software and services divisions around the world.

GM confirmed the job cuts, first reported by CNBC, in a statement saying, “As we build GM’s future, we need to simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices and prioritize investments that will have the most impact.”

The cuts will also include about 600 jobs at GM’s technology campus near Detroit, CNBC reported. GM said about half of the cuts would be in the U.S. and that the job cuts were not due to cost-cutting but were the result of an operations review following the departure of Mike Abbott, executive vice president of software and services, who left the company in March for health reasons.

Abbott, a former Apple executive, was hired in 2023 to lead GM’s software development efforts as the automaker expands its investments in electric vehicles and subscription services.

After cutting hundreds of executive and full-time employees in February 2023, GM said about 5,000 full-time employees left the company in April 2023 following the acquisition deal as it works to meet its $2 billion cost-cutting target.
