A Gmail outage has left thousands of users unable to send emails or messages with the popular Google app.
The outage appears to have occurred around 3pm on Thursday. Down Detectora site that tracks online issues, cited about 5,000 reports within the hour.
According to DownDetector, around 82% of reported issues appear to be related to sending email, with only 15% citing direct server connection issues.
Users who tried to send messages were shown a red banner that read, “Message couldn’t be sent. Please check your network and try again.”
A map of Gmail outages in the US shows the issues are occurring across the country, with major hotspots in some of the US’s busiest hubs, such as New York City.
The issue prompted some of Gmail’s more than 1.8 billion active users around the world to take to social media to share their problems with the popular email service.
Many people have posted screenshots of the infamous “We’ve encountered a problem” message that Gmail displays when it encounters connection issues.
Google has not yet issued a statement about the outage, and the company did not immediately respond to The Washington Post’s request for comment.
It’s unclear how many people and businesses were affected by the issue, but DownDetector still listed more than 1,000 reports as of 5:12 a.m. ET.
This is an ongoing story…
