‘Go ask the Democrats’: NBA warned league’s ratings will continue to plummet ‘once you detach’ from Americans

Legendary radio host Colin Cowherd warned that NBA ratings are declining and will continue to decline if the league fails to empathize with average Americans.

During the first month of the 2024-2025 season, the league's ratings have been sluggish, with games aired on ESPN, the NBA's primary broadcast partner, down 28% year-over-year.

This comes after a 12% decline in last season's playoffs, leading to a 45% decline overall since 2012, Outkick said. reported.

Fox Sports' Cowherd slammed the NBA over ratings, saying it hasn't been able to bring back fans like other leagues like the NFL and MLB.

“Ratings have fallen 48% over the past 12 years and fell off a cliff this year. [Commissioner] Adam Silver's solution is to “light up the courtroom.'' ”

Cowherd went on to point out that it's a “very bad impression” on the NBA that a family of four goes to a game and big stars sit on the bench to conserve energy.

“I love the NBA, but I think the All-Star Game is an embarrassment now and load management is an embarrassment to the league,” he added in a viral clip from the show.flock. ”

Cowherd then gave the league a stern warning, comparing it to the Democratic Party's failed 2024 election bid.

“Listen to Democrats. Be warned: There will be a price to pay when you separate from ordinary Americans.”

Late November, terrible announcement pointed out The first half of the ESPN doubleheader averaged 1.22 million viewers. 40% less than the same period in 2023.

The second game of the night drew just 1.06 million viewers, a 47% decrease from the previous year.

“Everyone is playing the same way.”

Cowherd praised MLB commissioner Rob Manfred for how he made adjustments to the league to quell fan disdain for the length of games, for example.

“He gets nothing but criticism because it's like, 'Hey, we've got to make the game faster. We've got to get stars at the plate, so let's change the pitching clock.'

Regarding the NFL, Cowherd said that while it's a “tough league,” it has an “easiness to connect” with the American Midwest and “normal people,” and the NBA needs to explore that for itself.

The station then pointed to some of the smaller markets that have found success in the NFL, including “Little Baltimore,” Buffalo, Green Bay and Kansas City.

“Connectivity,” Cowherd repeated.

At the same time, NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal recently said he believes much of the league's decline in ratings is due to a significant increase in 3-point shooting.

“Everyone is putting on the same play. … Ratings will continue to decline unless we get things back on track,” O'Neill said. talk sports.

According to front office sportsO'Neal is right about the prevalence of 3-point shots. The average number of three-point attempts per team has nearly tripled since 2000, from 13.7 per team back then to 37 per team in 2024-2025.
