Gold Falls as Traders Reevaluate Demand for Safe Investments Following Trade Agreement

Gold Prices Experience Fluctuations Amid Economic Uncertainty

Gold prices faced downward pressure for the second time in three days as traders reacted to US inflation figures that came in below expectations for April, alongside easing tensions in trade with China.

Initially, bullion dropped by 0.9% before recovering some of those losses. Reports indicated that discussions between the US and South Korea regarding currency policies were contributing to a weaker dollar. On Monday, gold experienced significant sell-offs after a ceasefire in trade talks between Washington and Beijing prompted investors to shift away from safe-haven assets.

“We were somewhat caught off guard by how the tariff rates between the US and China seem to be alleviating investor worries over risks related to trade-driven growth,” an analyst noted. “Resource allocation is likely shifting away from both the defense sector and gold.”

After a productive meeting in Switzerland over the weekend, investor interest in riskier assets surged, resulting in a rally that helped the S&P 500 recover from earlier losses in 2025.

This year, precious metals remain elevated, holding their position around the fifth-highest level after reaching an all-time high above $3,500 last month amidst escalating trade tensions. Concerns about conflict potentially hampering growth, a recession, and rapidly increasing inflation have driven investor sentiment.

On Tuesday, data revealed that US price growth in April was weaker than anticipated, suggesting that businesses might absorb some of the rising tariff costs, which could support further interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve this year.

As of 10:05 AM in London, spot gold traded 0.6% lower at $3,232.50 per ounce after a slight increase of 0.4% on Tuesday. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was down by 0.4%. While silver prices dipped, platinum and palladium showed varied performance.
