Archaeologists recently uncovered two gold rings at an ancient burial site in Thailand, with one featuring an intriguing inscription that dates back about 2,000 years.
The Associated Press reported that the ring was found in late June at the Don Yai Thong ruins, which are located in Phetchaburi province.
The Thai Fine Arts Department noted that the ring was discovered alongside human bones.
Dong Yai Thong, situated about 130 miles southwest of Bangkok, has only recently been recognized as an archaeological site. Earlier this year, locals found fragments of an ancient bronze drum in a nearby rice field, which led archaeologists to investigate the area further.
Photos reveal that one ring has a brief inscription on its oval surface, believed to be in the ancient Indian Brahmi script. Experts interpret it to say “Psarakitasa,” which translates to “one protected by Pusha.”
Pusha relates to a lunar constellation in ancient Indian astronomy, often linked with luck and protection, hinting that the inscription might serve as a blessing of sorts.
The second gold ring is well-preserved but lacks any engraved patterns.
Experts suggest the owner of the ring may have belonged to the Vaishya class, typically associated with merchants in ancient India’s social hierarchy.
This site has yielded many artifacts, including eight human bones, gold and bronze jewelry, pottery, and other historical items. The grave goods indicate that the deceased were likely of higher social status.
The authorities have announced that work at the ruins will proceed, with excavation expected to be completed by the end of July. Eventually, these artifacts will be made available for public display.
This discovery aligns with other archaeological finds worldwide, like a recently uncovered tomb in Panama containing over 1,000-year-old gold pieces and decorative pottery. In addition, Egyptian archaeologists also recently found ancient artifacts in Heliopolis, an area steeped in history.
